Scorchers again too hot for Sixers

Marcus Harris was top scorer fr the Scorchers in Sydney.

The Sydney Sixers suffered a batting failure as their perfect start to the Big Bash League season was ended with a 36-run defeat to the Perth Scorchers at the SCG.

The home side, having won their first three matches of the campaign, collapsed to 99 all out against the defending champions.

Perth claimed their fourth consecutive victory over the Sixers as they claimed the last seven wickets for just 27 runs.

The Scorchers’ 7-135 was less than they would have wanted after being 4-108 with five overs to go.

But three wickets in the space of six balls put the brakes on their innings, with Mitchell Starc claiming two in an over when he bowled both Ashton Agar and Sam Whiteman.

Marcus Harris led the way for the visitors with 36 from 26 balls, while six other batsmen reached double figures but failed to make the most of their starts.

The Sixers self-destructed from the 13th over of their chase, starting when skipper Moises Henriques stepped back onto his stumps to be out for 23.

Riki Wessels was their only other batsman to pass 10, hitting two sixes in his 28 before falling to a run out from Andrew Tye to end his 43-run partnership with Henriques.

Once Henriques was out, the Sixers failed to muster a stand of more than 11 as the wickets tumbled.

Tye dismissed Jordan Silk and Sean Abbott in the same over, and a bowling change saw Ashton Turner repeat that feat in the next over.

He had Starc caught by Adam Voges at short fine leg for a first-ball duck and trapped Luke Doran in front four balls later.

The end came, with 15 balls remaining, when Yasir Arafat claimed his second wicket by having Ryan Carters caught by Voges for eight.

Meanwhile, the Adelaide Strikers will put the BBL’s only 100 per cent record on the line when they take on Hobart Hurricanes, with the Strikers¬†2.00 and the Hurricanes 1.80.
