The moment Leeds United’s president, Massimo Cellino, suggested he would ‘prefer to sign someone else’ even if Sam Byram changed his mind about the new contract offer he had turned down, the writing was on the wall for the player’s future at the club. The 22-year-old’s 130th appearance for Leeds in a 2-1 defeat by Ipswich at Portman Road last week was to be his last for the club, with a move to West Ham on the cards, after he opted against a transfer to Everton despite talks at the Merseyside club last weekend.
