Saints snap up Elia

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman is looking forward to seeing Eljero Elia let his football do the talking having signing on a loan deal for the rest of the season.

The Dutch international has found games hard to come by in the Bundesliga this season with Werder Bremen and Saints have worked quickly to get a deal over the line.

Elia has moved to St Mary’s on loan but that deal could become permanent in the summer should Koeman decide to keep hold of the winger.

The player has had some high-profile off-field spats in the past but Koeman has no concerns and is looking forward to seeing Elia in action.

He said: “I know the player, I know the family of the player, I know the agent of the player. He’s a serious boy and he wants the chance to play football. He has the chance to play football at Southampton.

“It’s a good step, a big step for him. He’s still not 100 per cent because he didn’t play the last few months.

“But for the next weekend he will be prepared and he has to take his chance. For the rest, that is separate from football and I’m not interested.”

Southampton are next in action in the Premier League on 11th January when they face Manchester United.

Saints are 4.33 to win, 3.75 to draw and 1.75 to lose at Old Trafford.
