Ryan determined to master defense

New Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan has set himself the target of making his side the number one-ranked defense in the NFL next season.

Ryan has forged a reputation for strong defense at the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens and is determined to follow the same path with the Bills, who narrowly missed out on the play-offs this season.

I know we’ll lead the league in defense. That’s just the way it goes.

And Ryan is aware of what it takes to win games and has plenty to work with at the Bills, with linemen Mario Williams, Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams all making the Pro Bowl, in a defense that was ranked no.4 during the regular season.

He said after taking on the challenge in Buffalo: “Fourth in the league is probably a little disappointing to be honest with you, because that’s not where my expectations are.

“I know we’ll lead the league in defense. That’s just the way it goes.

“You have three Pro Bowl players in the defensive line. You get a secondary that challenges, you get an outstanding group.

“The front seven is outstanding. So, do I expect to be outstanding on defense? Of course, there’s no question.”

The Bills have not made the play-offs since 1999, while the franchise is still awaiting its first-ever Super Bowl victory, with Buffalo having lost in the showpiece in four consecutive years between 1990 and 1993.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks are 2.15 to win Super Bowl XLIX, with the Green Bay Packers 6.50 and the Indianapolis Colts 9.00.
