Rugby Union – Townsend open to Lions role

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend says he would jump at the chance to join Warren Gatland's backroom staff for next year's British & Irish Lions tour. Townsend turned down a coaching role with the Lions for their previous tour to New Zealand in 2017, instead choosing to coach Scotland for the first time on a three-match tour of Singapore, Australia and Fiji. The 47-year-old played in the first two Tests of the Lions tour to South Africa in 1997 and admits it would be a "huge privilege" to tour with them as a coach. However, he thinks that he may be overlooked after turning down the chance four years ago. "It would be a huge privilege and honour to be involved with the Lions, but I'm not sure if I'll get asked this time after saying no last time," Townsend told The Courier. The British & Irish Lions are 4/7 with bet365 to win the series on the Lions Tour 2021.
