Rory Burns century gives Surrey commanding start against Hampshire

• Rory Burns made his first century of the season scoring 122 runs from 177 balls

Surrey, at least, have been consistent in one department this season. The batting may be timid, and the bowling taking time to get used to the rigours of Division One, but at least Gareth Batty is in form at the toss. This, in their 11th game, was his sixth consecutive win, and he has lost just one all year (he chose not to contest another, under this year’s new fangled rules).

As his openers, Rory Burns and Dominic Sibley, made hay (sharing 208 runs) on a flat pitch against a homogenous Hampshire attack – the only team below Surrey, indeed – Batty will have been satisfied with his sole contribution. Batty knows the result of this game, and the rematch at the Oval in September, will go a long way to deciding both cellar dwellers’ seasons. This looks an extremely good toss to have won.
