Rodgers insists Balotelli going nowhere

December 28, 2014 13:01:30 UK

Mario Balotelli has failed to sparkle since moving to Liverpool in the summer.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said Mario Balotelli will not be going back to his homeland in the January transfer window.

Reports in Italy have suggested that Inter Milan are interested in securing a loan move for the striker, who has failed to set the Premier League alight since arriving from AC Milan in a £16million move in the summer.

At this moment in time the key for me is trying to keep the squad together.

However, Rodgers says he has no plans to move Balotelli on, particularly as the Liverpool front-line has been severely weakened through the absence of Daniel Sturridge due to injury. The Reds are also struggling to deal with the huge void left by the departure of Luis Suarez.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Monday night match against Swansea – which the Reds are 1.72 to win, the Swans 5.50 and the draw 3.80 – Rodgers said: “It’s not something that I have even thought about to be honest. We’ve had a lot of games this season in a lot of competitions. At this moment in time the key for me is trying to keep the squad together.”

With a weakened strikeforce, Raheem Sterling is currently leading the line and his winning goal against Burnley on Boxing Day was his third in three games. He is 2.75 to score again against Swansea and Rodgers believes Sterling offers a great deal up front.

He continued: “I think Raheem and anyone with that type of pace will always stretch teams and will always make defenders think.

“He’s a different type and not your natural number nine. For me it’s more about the position than the player. For the team to function well, that pace in the team is very important for us.”
