Robinson: Take time with Burgess

Jason Robinson is adamant Sam Burgess will play a vital part in England’s success, but has urged patience over the development of the ex-South Sydney Rabbitohs’ forward.

Burgess arrived in Bath recently from Australia to begin his rugby union journey, a venture which he and Red Rose head coach Stuart Lancaster hope will see him playing for the country.

Because he’s big, strong and powerful, he’s one of those guys who doesn’t take a backward step.

The 25-year-old will have to force his way into the squad at the West Country outfit first, but Robinson insists that he will eventually take to the field at international level.

“He will know that if he gets his head down, doing a lot of hard work, it will come,” he said. “For me, it’s a matter of time. It’s not if, it’s just when.

“I don’t think there’s that much doubt, it’s just the timeframe of how long it will take him to get his head around the laws of the game and the complexities of the game.

“He’s not only big and strong, he’s got a great off-load, so I’m massively excited. Not only is it going to be good for Premiership rugby but it’s also good for international rugby as he’s going to bring a lot more competition to those places.”

Robinson is confident that Burgess will eventually understand the game, but the former England union full-back insists that they mustn’t initially overcomplicate matters.

He added: “Because he’s big, strong and powerful, he’s one of those guys who doesn’t take a backward step, so let’s not confuse him with all the complexities.

“Yes, it’s going to be different when he goes into contact, the placement of the ball, what he has to do at the breakdown area, but these are things he can pick up in training along the way.”

England can be backed at 4.33 to win the World Cup on home soil next year, with holders New Zealand 2.50 and South Africa 4.50.
