Roberts ready for Super League

Ben Roberts says he will fulfil a long-standing ambition by playing in next season’s Super League.

After making over 150 appearances in NRL with Canterbury Bulldogs, Parramatta Eels and Melbourne Storm, he has joined Castleford Tigers on a two-year contract and can’t wait to get started.

He said of his decision to come and play in England: “I wanted to make sure I still had a bit in me to give to the game.

“I didn’t want to come over here towards the back end of my career, when I thought I would probably only go another year or two. The way I am feeling right now, I could probably go another three or four years easily.”

The 29-year-old was born in Sydney but played international rugby league for New Zealand before electing to represent Samoa and he has played 12 times for them including in last year’s Four Nations series. He played in all three of Samoa’s defeats to England, New Zealand and Australia.

I wanted to make sure I still had a bit in me to give to the game.

Now in pre-season training with his new team, Roberts and the rest of the Tigers squad continue their preparations for the new campaign with friendlies against Bradford Bulls, Doncaster, Widnes and York City Knights to come.

Their first game of the new Super League season is at home to Wakefield Wildcats on 8th February where Roberts is due to face Samoan team-mate Pita Godinet.

Tigers finished fourth in the Super League at the end of the regular season. However, their season ended in the play-offs when they were beaten by St Helens in the qualifying play-off and then by Warrington Wolves in the preliminary semi-final.

The Tigers are priced at 41.00 to win this year’s Super League Grand Final with Leeds Rhinos at 5.50 and St Helens 4.33.
