Roar cut Kurtishi loose

Brisbane Roar have released striker Mensur Kurtishi midway through his one-year deal with the defending A-League champions.

The FYR Macedonia international was signed to replace leading scorer Besart Berisha, who moved to Melbourne Victory after last season.

Former coach Mike Mulvey, who was axed just six games into the campaign, brought in the 28-year-old last July from FYR Macedonian club FK Shkendija where he had scored nine goals in 13 games last season.

But he fell out of favour soon after Frans Thijssen took over as interim coach, and has not been used since coming off the bench in the 1-0 in over Western Sydney Wanderers on 3rd December. Kurtishi scored in his second game, the 3-2 defeat at Perth Glory, but that remained his only goal and he was restricted to five starts and four substitute appearances.

Brisbane’s decision to release him frees up an import spot as they gear up for a busy few months of A-League and Asian Champions League matches. The Roar areĀ 1.90 to finish in the A-League top six.

Roar director of football Ken Stead said: “We have a very busy second half of the season with Asian Champions League matches added to our normal programme and we need to have strong competition for places right across the park.”

Stead added Brisbane, who areĀ 17.00 to win the A-League Grand Final, were close to announcing new signings after considering a range of options both home and overseas.

The Roar open their Group Stage campaign in the Asian Champions League against a play-off winner at home on 25th February, with their other opponents being J.League outfit Urawa Red Diamonds and Suwon Bluewings from South Korea.
