Roach not worried over Pacquiao’s weight

Trainer Freddie Roach is adamant that being under weight will not hinder Manny Pacquiao in his WBO welterwieght title defence against Chris Algieri.

Manny Pacquiao’s weight is not an issues claims Freddie Roach.

The five-time Trainer of the Year is helping the 35-year-old Filipino and eight-division world champion put the final touches to his preparations for the showdown against the unbeaten 30-year-old Algieri in Macau on Saturday night.

Pacquiao is currently two pounds short of the 144-pound catchweight, but Roach has revealed that ‘The Pac-Man’ will be up to the desired weight come fight-night and he is enjoying being able to eat what he wants to around his training camp sessions.

He said: “Weight is not a problem.

“He is at 140 pounds after our workout yesterday and is 142 today. He will be 144 on the eve of the fight and climb the ring at an ideal weight of 146 or 147 (pounds). We don’t have any problem. We’re in a place where we want to be.”

Roach also believes that Algieri will face the more difficult task of trying to get his weight down going into the fight.

We don’t have any problem. We’re in a place where we want to be.

“Chris will be sluggish come fight day,” he added. “With his size, reducing food will slow him down. He should know that since he is a nutritionist.

“But weight is not gonna win the fight. When the bell rings, weight no longer matters. The better fighter is going to win the fight.”

Pacquiao is 1.10 to win, 1.57 by KO, TKO or Disqualification, while Algieri is 7.00 to come out on top.
