Richards urges more of the same

Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards has urged his side to maintain the vibrancy they displayed against Northampton Saints when they take on London Welsh.

The Tyneside-based outfit showed plenty of confidence in moving the ball through the phases versus Northampton and were rewarded with a four-try bonus point.

Although the Falcons had nothing to lose, London Welsh are a team they are expected to beat and consequently Richards urged his players not to play conservatively.

“It’s a different type of pressure but at the same time we’ve got to go in it and play the same way as we’re doing at the moment and not feel inhibited in any way, shape or form,” he said.

“We’re looking up rather than down and the viewpoint on the game this year has been so different to last year.

“We made a call earlier on that we want to start challenging the sides in the top-four which is what we’re doing.”

Although there is a danger of Newcastle going into their shells with a potential victory on the horizon, Richards is confident that they will continue to play with the same freedom.

He added: “The boys are really positive about the way we play, we go out there to enjoy ourselves and we’re not afraid to throw it around and have a bit of fun.

“There are some positives to come out of it, we scored four tries, but at the same time we’ve still got to look at ourselves and tighten up a bit.

“Everybody wants to have a go, whether it was Mark Wilson right through to Tom Catterick, Chris Harris or Tom Penny when he came off the bench.

“All the youngsters want to have a go and enjoy themselves and that’s what it’s all about and challenging the opposition in a way we think we should be.”

Newcastle Falcons are currently priced 1001.00 in the Aviva Premiership regular season winner market.
