Respondent to go in blinkers

WATC Derby winner Respondent is likely to wear blinkers in Thursday’s $500,000 Golden River Developments Perth Cup (2400m) at Ascot.

Respondent is looking to turn the tables on Real Love and could revert to wearing blinkers for the first time in almost 12 months.

Respondent, who hasn’t raced in blinkers since January, stamped his cup claims with an eye-catching run in last Saturday week’s WA St Leger (2100m).

He meets the others that beat him a bit better at the weights.

Blocked for clear running until the 100m, the four-year-old gained a late inside run and hit the line powerfully to finish third, half a length behind Real Love.

It was a huge improvement on Respondent’s seventh in the Railway Stakes (1600m) and 13th in the Kingston Town Classic (1800m), much to the delight of Breeder-owner Bob Peters.

Respondent won a maiden at Bunbury when wearing shades for the first time 12 months ago and he went on to dominate the Ascot autumn carnival earlier this year, winning the Lex Piper Stakes (1600m), JC Roberts Stakes (1800m) and WATC Derby (2400m).

“He puts in, but it was just the last 20 or 30m where he got his head in the air last start,” Peters said. “He looked like he was going to win, but he didn’t quite go on with it.

“It was a big improvement on what he’s been doing. He meets the others that beat him a bit better at the weights.”

Brad Parnham retains the ride on Respondent, who isĀ 9.00 to win the Perth Cup, with Real LoveĀ 2.75 and Son Of Something 11.00.
