Rennie to re-commit to Chiefs

January 21, 2015 10:25:59 UK

The Chiefs are expected to get coach Dave Rennie’s signature on a new two-year deal next week.

Rennie, who has been in charge for three seasons, will commit to the Hamilton-based franchise until the end of the 2017 campaign.

Though the 51-year-old has received offers to coach abroad, his desire to win a third championship with the Chiefs has led him to stay in his job.

We’re working through a process with him at the moment but I’m pretty confident we’ll get the right outcome and sign him for at least another two-year term.

The team’s bid to win three titles in a row fell short last year when they lost in week one of the finals to the Brumbies.

Chiefs chief executive Andrew Flexman said: “We’re working through a process with him at the moment but I’m pretty confident we’ll get the right outcome and sign him for at least another two-year term.”

The franchise, who are 4.50 to win the 2014 Grand Final, will turn their attentions to finding a replacement for assistant coach Tom Coventry, who will leave at the end of this season to join London Irish.

Flexman said of Coventry’s replacement: “In an ideal world we’d like to appoint from within our catchment, but the reality is they’ve got to be good enough.

“We’ve seen in our environment how important it is to have technically and tactically competent coaches but also coaches who work well together. It’s a big, big piece for us; you can’t win Super Rugby crowns unless you’ve got the right mix there.”

The Chiefs are 1.65 to win their Super Rugby season opener against the Blues, who are 2.25.

Meanwhile, former Australian schoolboys prop Jed Gillespie has signed a deal with the Melbourne Rebels.

Gillespie, who played in game of the Greater Sydney Rams’ National Rugby Championship campaign last year, is renowned for his love of carrying the ball.

He will be part of the franchise’s extended playing squad this year, with coach Tony McGahan saying he added value to their program through his desire to improve and to succeed.
