Reid recovery in good Hans

January 07, 2015 10:42:34 UK

Collingwood hope treatment from the German specialist dubbed “Healing Hans” will put Ben Reid on course to return strongly next season.

The Magpies big man was limited to just four games in 2014 by soft-tissue problems including calf and quad strains.

He was on the sidelines until Round 18 and his season ended when he injured his calf five minutes into the Round 21 defeat to Brisbane.

In search of a solution to the long-standing issue, Collingwood obtained AFL approval for the 25-year-old to fly to Munich to receive treatment.

We are not expecting a miracle, but we just think it is worth having a deeper look at what is causing all the problems.

He has been helped by world-leading soft tissue specialist Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfart, who has previously treated Richmond’s Mark Coughlan and Geelong premiership player Max Rooke.

Reid had his first round of treatment on Monday and is expected back in Melbourne at the weekend.

The Magpies, who are 31.00 to win the Grand Final, put their faith in a specialist who has previously treated the likes of sprinter Tyson Gay, football star Ronaldo and tennis champion Boris Becker.

Collingwood football manager Neil Balme said: “We are not expecting a miracle, but we just think it is worth having a deeper look at what is causing all the problems.

“We are pretty confident we will get a decent result.”

Reid, an All-Australian in 2011, suffered his latest injury setback last month when he re-injured his calf.

Balme said the injury to the swingman, who has played 99 games for the club and was a premiership player in 2010, was a relatively minor one.

But he added: “There didn’t seem to be any good reason for it and we are hoping there is not (a major problem). We just wanted to look into it a bit more to see systematically if there was anything wrong.”

Collingwood are 2.40 to finish in the top eight in 2015.
