Redknapp told to carry on by Fernandes

January 19, 2015 12:30:07 UK

Harry Redknapp has been told by chairman Tony Fernandes his job as manager of relegation-threatened QPR is safe and he will be allowed to bring in new players.

The west London club are second from bottom in the top flight but just one point adrift of Burnley immediately outside of the relegation places.

Social media was awash with speculation 67-year-old Redknapp would be sacked if his side lost at home to Manchester United on Saturday, and, although they were defeated 2-0, Fernandes said he had not lost faith in Redknapp’s leadership qualities.

“I thought it was time to end all the speculation, so everyone can focus on the challenge ahead,” he said in a statement on QPR’s website.

“I firmly believe Harry is the best man to get us out of the position we currently find ourselves in.”

Fernandes revealed had spoken at length with the former Tottenham and Portsmouth manager about the club’s perilous position but did not disclose whether his job was under threat.

Key to survival will be improving a wretched away record which has seen the capital club lose all 10 games on the road so far this season.

Fernandes also confirmed he will be helping Redknapp in his efforts to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window.

“We know we need to improve our away form and Harry, his coaching staff and the squad will be doing all they can to turn around our fortunes on our travels,” added Fernandes.

“It’s very tight in the table and we will do our best to strengthen where we can to give us the best possible chance.”

QPR are currently priced 1.72 to be relegated at the end of the season and 4.00 to finish bottom of the Premier League.
