Recalled Haskell targets victories

The recalled James Haskell says England are not content with just pushing the leading sides in the world hard and want to put wins on the board.

Haskell is one of three changes made by head coach Stuart Lancaster for the clash with Samoa on Saturday, with Richard Wigglesworth and Billy Twelvetrees also called up at the expense of Billy Vunipola, Danny Care and Kyle Eastmond.

No-one is satisfied to only be pushing those teams close.

And Haskell is determined to try and help England re-establish themselves after five consecutive defeats, including narrow losses to New Zealand and South Africa so far this Autumn.

He told reporters: “I have been involved with England when we were getting beaten heavily by these sides and when a narrow loss would have been acceptable.

“But this side has now developed to a point where we have beaten the world champions and where we ultimately should be beating these teams and be right up there.

“It’s very easy to see us as plucky runners-up, but not one person in this entire environment has ever said that is the case. No-one is satisfied to only be pushing those teams close.

“We realise we want to be beating them, we should be beating them.”

Wasps star Haskell returns to the fold after being omitted following the loss of the first of three Tests against the All Blacks in the summer, with the back-row forward having won 51 caps to date.

England can be backed at 4.33 to win the World Cup on home soil next year, with New Zealand2.50 and South Africa 4.50.
