Real must move on from Copa – Ancelotti

Real Madrid must forget about their Copa del Rey exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid and force of winning the Champions League and Lia Liga, according to boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Los Blancos saw the defence of their Spanish Cup crown ended in midweek as Atleti claimed a 2-2 draw at the Bernabeu, advancing to the quarter-finals 4-2 on aggregate.

The Copa del Rey exit came on the back of a sloppy start to 2015, Real’s winning streak coming to an end when they lost 2-1 to Valencia earlier this month.

Ancelotti has now called for his players to re-focus on the job at hand, with Real still top of La Liga and through to the last-16 of the Champions League.

“We paid for some of our mistakes, and we have to address that. Now, this month, we can focus on the league and then the Champions League,” said the Italian coach.

“Being self-critical, I would say that in the two games we were in control and we played well, but we paid for some of our mistakes, which didn’t allow us to progress in the cup.

“It hurts because it was one of the club’s objectives. But we have to look forward — we’re in two competitions.

“Now we have one month to consolidate our position in the league and try to win more points than our rivals, and then we’ll look at the Champions League.”

Real have a chance to respond to Thursday’s cup exit when they face fellow Madrid side Getafe on Sunday, a game they are 1.20 to win, with the hosts 14.00 and the draw 7.00.

Ancelotti looks set to keep faith the majority of the team which failed to get the better of Atletico on Thursday, claiming he did not think his squad needed freshening up.

“We’ve had a few injuries, but the squad is fine,” he added. “Rotating is not absolutely essential — we haven’t had that many games. I don’t think the team looks tired.”

The Spanish giants are 3.75 to become the first team in the Champions League era to retain the European Cup this season, with Schalke awaiting in the knockout stages.
