Quins in confident mood

December 30, 2014 11:48:29 UK

Joe Marler missed the defeat to Northampton but isn’t a long-term concern for Quins.

Harlequins’ director of rugby Conor O’Shea is confident the team will start climbing the table.

The London-based outfit have failed to display the type of fluidity they have become renowned for, but they showed plenty of pace and invention in their loss to Northampton Saints.

O’Shea feels that if Quins can replicate that kind of performance on a regular basis they will improve their league position ahead of Sunday’s clash with London Welsh.

He said: “The boys played, they played with ambition and we were devastated to lose against Northampton. We know we have a long climb to get ourselves back to where we need to be in the league, but it’s a climb we’re willing to take on. We will meet the challenge, we always have and we always will.

“Five points has to be the aim against Welsh and if we play with the intensity and the ambition we played against Northampton, we’re just going to keep the ball in play and we’re going to move it around. That’s all I want us to do for the rest of the season. You can’t fault our defence and our work ethic.”

Quins faced a full-strength Northampton without some key players in their side, including Nick Evans and Joe Marler, but O’Shea says that they aren’t long-term absentees.

“There’s just one thing that is limiting Nick and it’s the same with Joe Marler as well. Both trained on the Thursday but it just wasn’t right and you can’t risk them,” he added.

“I think we will get them right in the next couple of weeks and make sure that they’re 100 per cent.

“They were all so desperate to get out there against Northampton. Robbo (Chris Robshaw) wanted to get out there with his half a shoulder but we’ll get those guys back.”

Quins are 51.00 to win the Aviva Premiership Grand Final and Saints are available at 2.75.
