QPR crash out of FA Cup

The FA Cup third round has not produced too many shocks so far, though one occurred at Loftus Road as QPR’s poor run in the competition continued as they were beaten at home by Sheffield United of League One.

An emphatic 3-0 scoreline sent the Yorkshire side through to the fourth round as Nigel Clough’s side seek to emulate last season when they reached the semi-final.

Marc McNulty, United’s top scorer, got the first goal, finishing off a neat move in the 36th minute. That was the score at half-time but two further goals, both from Jamal Campbell-Ryce, put the outcome of the tie beyond doubt.

The latest defeat for QPR continues a dreadful run of form in the FA Cup. They have only won two ties in the past 14 seasons and have lost 46 out of 70 third round fixtures.

For the visit of their League One opponents, manager Harry Redknapp made seven changes from the team that drew with Swansea in the Premier League on New Year’s Day. However, it was still a team that included leading scorer Charlie Austin and a central defensive partnership of Steven Caulker and Rio Ferdinand.

QPR did have chances in the game with Bobby Zamora, putting a header wide while Leroy Fer forced a good save from Mark Howard in the United goal and had a header cleared off the line.

However, United kept a clean sheet and continue their good run in the domestic cup competitions. They are through to the semi-finals of this season’s Capital One Cup having already beaten West Ham and Southampton along the way.

Rangers meanwhile are left to concentrate on the Premier League survival bid.

In 16th place in the table, two points clear off the bottom three, their next game is a key game at the bottom as they travel to fellow strugglers Burnley. They are 3.20 to win the game, Burnley are 2.25 and the draw is 3.40.
