Platinum Gray could step in for Bassillique

January 03, 2014 14:57:11 UK

The Toby Edmonds-trained Bassillique remains only a 50-50 proposition for the Gold Coast’s Magic Millions meeting, but Platinum Gray could force his way into the field.

Edmonds admits that Bassillique is facing a race against time to make it but has been given a lifeline with Platinum Gray, who has received a late nomination for tomorrow.

“If he wins on Saturday he will be running for sure,” Edmonds said.

“Maybe we’re hoping more than anything, but he’s a nice horse that I have a bit of time for.”

Elsewhere, Pinch River is a definite starter according to his trainer Rob Heathcote, but Echo Gal, who flopped in the McLachlan Stakes last week, must run in front of the stewards and the vet on Saturday morning before confirming her place.

Stablemate Cyclone will run but tomorrow’s short-priced Rosehill favourite Fighting Sun will not back up in the Millions even if he wins easily, according to Gai Waterhouse’s stable representative Mark Newnham.

“Initially the owners weren’t that keen to run Cyclone, but when the race changed complexion last Saturday they had a change of heart,” Newnham said.

“The horse is fit and well, so there’s no reason not to run him and they are happy to go.”

Newnham confirmed Aussies Love Sport and Whittington will not run in the Guineas, but Whittington will be a Magic Millions day runner though, being set for the $200,000 MM Sprint (1100m).

It means Waterhouse is left with race favourite Sweet Idea and Northern Glory in her quest to win the Guineas for a third time.

Sweet Idea can be backed at 5.00 to win the Magic Millions while Northern Glory is at 17.00.
