Pietersen powers Stars to victory

Kevin Pietersen continued to erase the painful memories of his last trip to Australia with a batting masterclass in Melbourne Stars’ eight-wicket win over Sydney Thunder.

The Stars have virtually secured a place in the Big Bash League semi-finals after making light work of chasing down their 107-run target at Spotless Stadium.

Since I’ve turned up here, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and gone out to have fun and win games of cricket.

The Thunder’s defeat means they will miss out on the finals for the fourth straight year.

The Thunder lost their first three wickets for just nine runs and only their fourth-wicket stand of 59 between Aiden Blizzard and Andrew McDonald pushed them towards a respectable total.

When Blizzard fell for 45 from 48 balls to leave the Thunder on 6-83, they were only just able to stutter into three figures.

Pietersen showed them how it should be done, cracking 10 fours and a six in his match-winning innings of 67 from 42 balls.

He and captain Cameron White combined in a second-wicket stand of 76 in 49 balls, with Pietersen still unbeaten at the end as the Stars got home with 5.3 overs to spare.

Pietersen said: “To be honest, since the first net I had in Australia, I’ve lost all the pain in my knee and I feel like a different player.

“Since I’ve turned up here, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and gone out to have fun and win games of cricket.

“When I played here in the Ashes, I was nowhere. I had a horrendous time. I was on the physio bench three or four times a day. It’s just nice to be playing with freedom.”

The Stars are 1.80 to win their final group stage game against Perth Scorchers, who are 2.00 to win themselves.
