Phoenix price tag for Burns too high – agent

January 21, 2015 08:57:52 UK

Nathan Burns’ agent claims his price-tag is too high.

The agent brokering the deal that would take Wellington Phoenix striker Nathan Burns to China says the A-League club are being unrealistic with their valuation.

Shanghai Shenhua switched their attentions to Socceroo Burns after Tomi Juric pulled the plug on his proposed move to the Chinese Super League outfit last week.

Shanghai had already agreed to pay Western Sydney Wanderers an Australian record $2 million transfer fee, despite Juric being in the final months of his contract.

Clubs in the A-League are trying to cash in but salary has nothing to do with a transfer fee. Clubs need to be a little more realistic in their expectations.

But when the Phoenix placed the same price tag on Burns, who is contracted to the club until the end of next season, agent Ante Alilovic said the New Zealanders were over-valuing the player.

Wellington are 6.50 to win the A-League Grand Final.

Shanghai are reportedly only prepared to pay $1 million to sign the A-League’s leading goalscorer.

Burns would stand to earn $2.5 million net per season, and Alilovic said the indications were that the player was happy to join them.

“But the situation is that Shanghai are not willing to match Wellington’s asking price, which for a player soon to be out of contract they believe to be somewhat unrealistic,” added the agent. “The figure will need to be in a far lower price than that.”

Alilovic said Shanghai believed A-League clubs were upping their asking price when they learned of the salaries being offered to their players.

“The clubs look at the wages, rather than market value, and that’s becoming a major issue,” he added.

“Clubs in the A-League are trying to cash in but salary has nothing to do with a transfer fee. Clubs need to be a little more realistic in their expectations.”

Wellington are 3.00 to win their next A-League match against Brisbane Roar, who are 2.30 with the draw 3.40.
