Permaul praises impressive Guyana

January 16, 2015 17:17:24 UK

Veerasammy Permaul has praised Guyana’s full commitment after they began the Nagico Super50 competition with a comprehensive victory over the Windward Islands.

Left-arm spinner Permaul returned figures of 10-5-12-4 in the crushing 142-run success at Queen’s Park Oval. Although the 25-year-old hastened the Windwards to defeat, however, as they plunged from 34-0 to 85 all out, he paid tribute to the all-round effort as the Jaguars made the perfect start.

Wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble’s late assault of 43 not out from 23 balls provided a challenging total of 227-6 to defend.

The guys really went out and put in 110 per cent – we are confident and the first game was a total team effort.

“The guys really went out and put in 110 per cent – we are confident and the first game was a total team effort,” said Permaul.

The slow left-armer forms a three-pronged spin attack with leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo and off-spinner Steve Jacobs and they handed out a warning to future Nagico opponents by snaring combined figures of 7-33 in 25.4 overs.

“It’s a good pitch to bowl spin on as the slower you bowl the more purchase you get and so I mixed it up to keep the batsmen guessing,” said Permaul.

“Our bowling was good but so was our batting as we knew that if we kept wickets in hand we could accelerate at the bottom. Overall we have played good cricket and the confidence we generated in winning in four-day cricket has transferred into the one-dayers.”

Meanwhile, West IndiesĀ are 1.66 to be eliminated from the World Cup at the quarter-final stage.
