Pellegrini turns to capital gains

January 19, 2015 07:19:45 UK

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has identified his side’s trip to Stamford Bridge to take on leaders Chelsea at the end of the month as season-defining.

The champions crashed to a 2-0 defeat by Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday and are now five points behind Jose Mourinho’s men at the top of the table.

“The game we play at Stamford Bridge is a very important game. We must close the gap to two points.”

The north-west giants travel to west London on 31st January for what promises to be a huge showdown and Pellegrini said he was aware his players have to make a dent in Chelsea’s bid to win the Premier League title.

“The game we play at Stamford Bridge is a very important game. We must close the gap to two points,” he said.

“It’s very important to win the next game against Chelsea. I hope we are going to recover and play the way we have been playing so far.”

A penalty from Spain playmaker Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud’s header sealed the win for Arsenal but Pellegrini refused to blame the absence of influential midfielder Yaya Toure because of the Africa Cup of Nations on his side’s defeat.

City have not won a Premier League game without the former Barcelona powerhouse since April last year but 61-year-old Pellegrini insisted they were not a one-man team.

“I think Yaya is a very important player, but I never have excuses,” he added.

“We play other games without Yaya and can win also. I never have excuses with one or two players why we don’t win.”

Manchester City are currently priced 6.00 to win the Premier League title and leaders Chelsea are quoted 1.20.
