The New Year's Day Glasgow derby between Partick Thistle and leaders Celtic has been postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

It follows a 13:00 GMT pitch inspection at Firhill ahead of the planned 17:30 kick-off.

Celtic could be overtaken at the top of the Scottish Premiership should Aberdeen defeat St Johnstone at Pittodrie in their match at 15:00.

Thistle had been hoping to overtake eighth-top Dundee.

The Dark Blues were hammered 6-2 by neighbours Dundee United in the early kick-off.

A statement on Thistle's website read: "Unfortunately, following a pitch inspection, and despite the best efforts of the ground staff, today's game against Celtic has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch."

Thistle added that a new date for the fixture will be announced "as soon as possible".
