Panthers host the Cardinals in NFC Wild Card

The Panthers are in action against Arizona Cardinals.

The NFC South Division winning Carolina Panthers entertain the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday in what could be a compelling NFC Wild Card game.

The best team in the NFC through the first nine weeks of the season, the Cardinals lost quarterback Carson Palmer against the St. Louis Rams and despite rallying to win that game haven’t been the same since. Just 3-4 down the stretch with first Drew Stanton and then Ryan Lindley under center, Arizona is a shadow of their former selves as they head to the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte to play the Panthers.

Despite a less than .500 record Carolina rallied down the stretch to win four in a row and edge the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons for the Divisional crown. Mike Smith paid the price for that failure on Monday when he was fired as the Atlanta coach in one of the least surprising off-season moves.

A win over the Panthers at the Georgia Dome on the final day of the season would have given the Falcons an unlikely playoff berth. However a 34-3 Panthers rout gave the visitors the post-season place and sealed the fate of the Atlanta head coach.

Down in New Orleans Sean Payton appears safe with the Saints despite quite possibly the most under achieving performance of any side in the NFL this season. New Orleans finished 7-9 on the campaign, but should have been so much more especially given the relative strengths of the Panthers, Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Cardinals are 41.00 to win the Super Bowl, while the Panthers can be backed at 41.00.
