O’Shea draws on Easter inspiration

January 04, 2014 09:56:26 UK

Harlequins director of rugby Conor O’Shea believes that Nick Easter’s international situation epitomises the team’s own ‘backs-to-the-wall’ mentality.

Having struggled at the start of the season, Quins were written off as potential Aviva Premiership title challengers.

It’s the challenge we at Quins have at the moment because people wrote us off at the start of the season.

And despite the 23-9 defeat to Northampton Saints last night, the London-based outfit currently reside in a play-off position against the expectations of some observers.

Meanwhile, back-rower Easter has his own personal ambition to play for England once again, despite not featuring for the Red Rose since their ill-fated World Cup campaign, and O’Shea is adamant that his form warrants inclusion.

“He’s desperate to play but the motivation is to prove people wrong,” he said. “It’s the challenge we at Quins have at the moment because people wrote us off at the start of the season. We have a long haul to meet that challenge, but we’ll rise to it just like Nick is.

“You know how passionate people are playing for their country. I’ve talked to Stuart about it, I can’t believe that when you name 64 players to 66 he is not in that best 66 in the country with the way that he plays week in week out.

“I understand that Stuart will keep the door open for him and he probably gets annoyed with me because I keep on banging the drum.

“If someone plays like that, with that quality, he’s a match-winner. He’ll keep on going. In 12 months’ time, if he’s playing like this I don’t think the door will be closed for him.”

Quins can now be backed atĀ 10.00 to win the Aviva Premiership Grand Final, with NorthamptonĀ 3.25 and Saracens 2.50.
