The Greater Manchester police and crime commissioner, Tony Lloyd, has become the latest high-profile public figure to ask Oldham Athletic not to sign convicted rapist Ched Evans as the striker has shown “no remorse”.

Lloyd’s intervention into the affair followed an earlier demand from Ed Miliband, the Labour leader, with Mecca Bingo and Verlin Rainwater Solutions, two of Oldham’s sponsors, also stating each would withdraw if the 26-year-old joined.
