Oar: Ajax would be a great move

January 16, 2015 12:47:30 UK

Ajax could be about to move for Socceroo Tommy Oar, after sending fellow Australian Awer Mabil home following a trial.

Mabil, whose form for Adelaide United brought him to notice outside Australia, was invited for a week’s trial by the Dutch giants during the A-League’s Asian Cup break.

But the 19-year-old winger has flown back to Adelaide without receiving an offer from Ajax, who are 2.37 to win the Eredivisie title, and United say they have had no indication how his trial went.

Ajax have a great reputation for producing and developing young players so it would be a great move.

While Mabil, who has scored three goals in 12 games for the Reds this season, is set to spend the rest of the season in Adelaide, Oar has reportedly attracted interest from Ajax. The former Brisbane Roar player, who played all three games for Australia at the World Cup in Brazil last year, is being shopped around by his club Utrecht.

The 23-year-old has just five months left on his contract, and admits he is happy to be linked with the Amsterdam side. Oar says he has told his agent to handle the situation as he does not want any distractions while he is playing for Australia at the Asian Cup.

He added: “I’ve got six months left on my contract, people start talking and the situation becomes more alarming I guess. The pedigree of Ajax speaks for itself. They have a great reputation for producing and developing young players so it would be a great move.

“But I’m not focused on it at all. It’s on doing as well as I can here and helping the (Socceroos). The better it goes here the better it will reflect on me.”

Oar is hopeful of more game-time in the Asian Cup, having not featured in the opening group game against Kuwait and then been sent on with 16 minutes left in Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Oman. Australia are 3.25 to win the Asian Cup outright.
