No pressure on Popovic

Western Sydney Wanderers will not force Tony Popovic out of the club.

Tony Popovic won’t be forced out of Western Sydney Wanderers, club boss John Tsatsimas has insisted.

Wanderers indicated they would allow Popovic to talk to Crystal Palace if the Premier League strugglers made an official approach.

But with that potential move off the table following Palace’s approach for Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew, club CEO John Tsatsimas stressed that the coach’s future was not under threat regardless of their poor form.

Western Sydney have reached the Grand Final in their first two seasons in the A-League, but their hangover from their AFC Champions League success last month has had a major impact on their domestic form.

He’s totally focused on where we’re at and we’re focused on where we need to be with him. So no chance of him being under pressure.

They are without a win so far this season and four points adrift at the bottom of the league.

This year began with them second in the table with six victories, but ends with them 10 points off the top six. Wanderers are 26.00 to win the Grand Final.

Tsatsimas said Popovic’s position was “absolutely not” under threat, adding: “A more diligent, meticulous, committed and professional coach you wouldn’t find.

“He’s totally focused on where we’re at and we’re focused on where we need to be with him. So no chance of him being under pressure.”

Pre-season signing Vitor Saba is one of the players rumoured to be on their way out of the club during the transfer window, while captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley has been linked with a move to Asia.

Tsatsimas said there was no offer on the table for Topor-Stanley, but would not comment on the position of any other player.

He added: “There’s still a few days to go before the January transfer window opens, so we don’t know what opportunities [will] arise.

“We have to be diligent in assessing everything that’s in front of us going into what is also a fairly arduous back-end of the season, again with the Champions League starting in February.”
