Murray hurries into third round

Andy Murray wasted little time swatting aside Marinko Matosevic as he eased into the third round of the Australian Open.

The sixth seed crushed the Australian 6-1 6-3 6-2 in one hour and 42 minutes to set up a third-round encounter with Portugal’s Joao Sousa.

Murray set the tone for the match by cruising into a 5-0 lead after just 14 minutes and he never looked back after that, breaking Matosevic’s serve at regular intervals.

Thankfully it was quite quick because it was warm out there.

The Scot made just 12 unforced errors in the one-sided encounter while Matosevic made 49.

“I’m pumped to be into the third round. Thankfully it was quite quick because it was warm out there,” the 2013 Wimbledon champion said.

“I started the match very well. Marinko was slow at the beginning and improved as the match went on. There were tight games in the second and third sets and they could have gone either way.

“But they went my way and it was a good match.”

Murray has won through to three previous Australian Open finals, in 2010, 2011 and 2013 but has beaten in all of them. He was knocked out in the quarter-finals in Melbourne 12 months ago.

Murray is 9.00 to win the Australian Open title outright, while Roger Federer can be backed at 6.50 and reigning champion Stan Wawrinka at 13.00.
