Mourinho confident on Terry deal

John Terry is hoping to lead Chelsea to their first Premier League title since 2010.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says a new contract for captain John Terry is merely a “formality”.

The 34-year-old former England international defender’s current deal expires at the end of the campaign, and Mourinho believes that he is playing as well as he did when Chelsea won the Premier League ten seasons ago.

There are no doubts that he is going to get another contract. I know that, he knows that.

Terry has spent his entire career at Stamford Bridge, featuring nearly 650 times for the Blues. He has won the Champions League and Europa League in west London, while Terry is aiming to lead his side to a fourth Premier League title this season. They are 1.44 to secure this, while Manchester City are 3.25 to defend the crown they won last year successfully.

All of this has led to a desire to tie Terry down to a new contract, which is something that does not concern the Chelsea boss.

Mourinho said: “There are no doubts that he is going to get another contract. I know that, he knows that.

“He’s a very important player in the team, so the next contract sooner or later will come.”

Terry scored for the second successive game in the 2-0 win over West Ham on Boxing Day, a result which kept Chelsea three points clear of Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League.

Chelsea play fourth-placed Southampton on Sunday and are 1.90 to win, with the draw 3.60 and the Saints 4.50. Terry is 10.00 to score for the third match in a row.
