Monk ready for visit of title picks

Swansea City boss Garry Monk still has Saturday’s opponents and current leaders Chelsea down as the favourites to win the Premier League title this season.

Monk believes that Blues head coach Jose Mourinho has his strongest-ever squad at Stamford Bridge, as the Swans prepare to try and secure a first win over Chelsea since they returned to the top-flight in 2011.

At the start of the season I said they were my favourites to win the league and I still believe that.

Monk told reporters: “It’s probably the strongest squad I have ever seen at Chelsea. They’re a fantastic team – exceptional, world-class players all over the pitch. They have got an exceptional manager as well.

“At the start of the season I said they were my favourites to win the league and I still believe that, albeit they have got competition from teams around them.”

Chelsea are available at 1.40 to win the Premier League this season, with reigning champions Manchester City 3.25 and third-placed Southampton 151.00.

However, despite talking up the visitors to the Liberty Stadium, Monk is relishing the prospect of taking on the Londoners, having recently sold star striker Wilfried Bony to the Blues for a club record £28million.

He added: “It’s a really good challenge for us. I think they’re an exceptional team, one of the best in Europe.

“It’s a challenge for my players and it’s a challenge for myself to really try and put on a performance and hopefully we can warrant a good result.”

Bafetimbi Gomis is set to lead the Swans attack following the departure of Bony, who is currently away on African Cup of Nations duty with the Ivory Coast.
