Monk eager for Gomis to step up

Striker Bafetimbi Gomis has been urged by Swansea City boss Garry Monk to build on his two-goal display in the 6-2 FA Cup third round win over Tranmere Rovers.

The summer signing has played mainly a back-up role since his arrival from Lyon, but stepped up to the plate on Saturday, with star frontman Wilfried Bony heading off to the African Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast.

He will be the first choice and he is ready to go and hopefully he produces performances like that.

And Monk is keen to see the France international continue the good work and compensate for the absence of Bony in the next month.

He told reporters: “He probably hasn’t had the amount of minutes he would have liked – he’s still played of course, but in terms of why I brought him to the club you could see it there today.

“Hopefully he takes it into this next period now – he will be the first choice and he is ready to go and hopefully he produces performances like that.”

Swansea are available at 41.00 to win the FA Cup this season, with Cardiff City 126.00 and Aston Villa 67.00.

Meanwhile, Monk is looking forward to midfield starlet Matt Grimes, who has joined the Swans from League Two Exeter City.

He added: “He’s at the right club to develop. We have a group of young players who we need to be as strong as possible for us.

“Matt will come into that first-team squad and hopefully we can develop him and other into something special for the future of this club.”
