Mitch to miss Scorchers semi

Mitch Marsh will play grade cricket instead of BBL ahead of the World Cup.

Perth Scorchers will have to do without Test all-rounder Mitch Marsh in their Big Bash League semi-final next weekend.

The defending champions are already assured of a spot in the finals after winning five of their seven games so far.

Coach Justin Langer said he would have loved to have Marsh available for their semi-final, even as a batsman only, but the 23-year-old, who has not played in the last month, will instead turn out in grade cricket next weekend.

Marsh played in the first two Tests of the series against India, twice getting into the 40s in the first Test in Adelaide and taking 1/14 in the second match in Brisbane.

He has since been sidelined with a hamstring injury and will make his comeback in grade cricket in Sydney as he builds up towards the World Cup. A ballot will be held to decide which club gets to have Marsh for a day.

Langer said: “I guess if you’re going to play club cricket as a batsman only, I thought he might have played in the Big Bash where there will be a lot more pressure than perhaps you get in club cricket.

“It would have been nice, but it’s not the case. I think they’re trying to keep the (national) team together as much as possible. I guess they’re taking a conservative route with him, because he’s had some troubles with it in the past.”

The Scorchers, who have made the finals every season in the BBL, will play the Sydney Sixers or one of the Melbourne teams, the Stars or Renegades, in their semi-final.

Perth could pick pace bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile for Wednesday’s final group stage match against the Stars at the MCG even though he has not played in more than eight weeks.

The Scorchers areĀ 2.00 to beat the Stars, who areĀ 1.80 to win themselves.
