Missouri awaits Georgia

January 06, 2014 18:06:35 UK

Missouri Tigers open SEC play on Wednesday when the Bulldogs of Georgia arrive at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

A solitary defeat on their record after a reasonable, if not overly-taxing, non-conference schedule sees the Tigers enter conference play with the best mark in the SEC although Florida and Kentucky have played considerably tougher schedules.

The Bulldogs in contrast have been generally poor and arrive in town after consecutive defeats to Colorado and George Washington, the latter a 73-55 pasting at the Charles E. Smith Center in the nation’s capital.

The loss to the Buffaloes in Colorado snapped a five-game winning streak, but Appalachian State, Chattanooga, Lipscomb, Gardner-Webb and Western Carolina are not exactly schools that should scare a major conference side.

Missouri Tigers are quoted 61.00 in the NCAAB Championship outright winner market and Kentucky are available to back at 4.50.

Over in Spokane the Bulldogs of Gonzaga have had considerably more success as they increased their record to 14-2 at the expense of the Pacific Tigers. The WCC leaders, who play Portland on Thursday, shot a gaudy 69% from the floor at the McCarthey Athletic Center as they eased to an 86-64 triumph to remain unbeaten in their first four conference games.

Missouri and Gonzaga both moved up in the latest AP Top 25 poll as the Tigers jumped four places to number 21 and the Bulldogs climbed from 24th to 22nd. Into the poll come Kansas State and Illinois, the latter of whom defeated Missouri four days before Christmas.

Subsequent victories over Illinois-Chicago, Indiana and Penn State were enough to push the Fighting Illini to number 23 as they travel to Wisconsin on Wednesday to face the Badgers.
