Terry Campese has backed Anthony Milford’s bid to stay at fullback for Canberra.

Canberra Raiders ace Anthony Milford’s wish to continue playing at fullback has been supported by captain Terry Campese.

Milford will play one final season with the Raiders, before leaving to join Brisbane for 2015. And after months of uncertainty over his future, as he sought to gain a release so he could move to Queensland and be near his family, he says he is fully committed to helping Canberra have the best season possible.

“I’m concentrating on this year and trying to go out on a big note,” he said.

He returned to pre-season training at the start of this week, knowing expectations have risen since he rounded off his rookie season with the Raiders by winning the club’s player of the year award.

At fullback he can learn a lot, and he did win the Mal Meninga Medal when he played fullback.

Though he is widely seen as a future halves star, Milford says he wants to carry on playing fullback.

“Long term I’d like to end up in the halves, but last year I really enjoyed my time at the back,” he said. “You can see where the spaces are and who’s tired and who’s not, and you don’t have to do as much of the thinking.”

Campese said Milford was “definitely a half for the future”, but added: “At fullback he can learn a lot, and he did win the Mal Meninga Medal when he played fullback.”

Milford was granted extra time to rest before resuming pre-season training, following his efforts in the World Cup where he starred for Samoa.

The 19-year-old made his international debut in Samoa’s first game of the tournament and scored a try against France. He featured in all four of the country’s games and was named man of the match twice.

Canberra Raiders areĀ 34.00 to win the NRL grand final. The Raiders areĀ 9.00 to finish in the top four.
