McIlroy backed for more success

January 07, 2015 12:36:48 UK

Rory McIlroy is being backed to win more championships in 2015.

World number one Rory McIlroy has been tipped by 2014 European Ryder Cup-winning captain Paul McGinley to enjoy more championship glory.

The 25-year-old Northern Irishman brought his major tally to four last year with victories in The Open and US PGA Championship which now leaves him short of The Masters in order to complete a Grand Slam.

McIlroy would join Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Gene Sarazen in the elite list of players to have won the big four events if he manages to win the coveted green jacket at Augusta National.

I think the Masters is certainly one, Augusta is a golf course that really suits the type of game he plays and I would be really surprised at the end of his career if he hasn’t won more than one green jacket.

The nine-time PGA Tour winner came close to victory at The Masters in 2011, but blew a four-shot lead going into the final round.

However McGinley feels McIlroy will eventually end his elusive chase for the title and add more wins to his tally in the 2015 campaign having enjoyed such a successful spell last year.

“I think he will win more major championships,” he said. “I think the Masters is certainly one, Augusta is a golf course that really suits the type of game he plays and I would be really surprised at the end of his career if he hasn’t won more than one green jacket.”

McIlroy is 5.50 to win the Masters and can be backed at 6.00 to win two more major titles this year.
