McDermott backs young winger Handley

Leeds Rhinos head coach Brian McDermott believes young winger Ash Handley can be a star of 2015, after handing him a debut in the Boxing Day win over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

Handley is a recent graduate of the Leeds Rhinos Academy and has been added to the 2015 First Team squad and despite the tough competition for places in the Leeds threequarter line, McDermott believes that Handley can make an impact in the first team next year.

The hard work will continue in the New Year for all of the young players and the entire squad.

“There were a couple of puts downs, not so much easy puts downs, but just getting on the end of it. But then there was a couple of tries when he’s showed some pace and some strength and some awareness and skill,” said McDermott, reflecting on Handley’s performance in the win over the Wildcats.

“He has had a tough pre-season, as we all have had. Towards the back end of last year we all made some decent decisions about what we needed to do and Ash in particular has made some good decisions.

“I am pleased he has got some benefits and I am pleased that he’s felt rewarded for his hard work,” added McDermott. “The hard work will continue in the New Year for all of the young players and the entire squad.”

The Rhinos’ pre-season campaign will continue in January when they face Bradford Bulls for Jamie Peacock’s testimonial.

They open their 2015 Super League campaign with a trip to face Hull KR on 7th February and are 5.50 to win the Grand Final, with Wigan Warriors 3.75 and Warrington Wolves 5.00.
