Mateo eyes Manly glory

Manly Sea Eagles forward Feleti Mateo has his sights set on a first premiership as he goes into what will be his 10th NRL season.

It was the Sea Eagles who prevented him from winning in the most recent of his two grand finals in 2011, when they beat his NZ Warriors side 24-10.

The 29-year-old secured a release from his Warriors contract in October, signing for Manly on a two-year deal.

I’ve only been here a short time but you can tell everyone’s pretty tight and guys look after each other.

Having fallen short in deciders with both the Auckland club and with Parramatta Eels, the Tonga international wants to rectify that with the Sea Eagles, who are 12.00 to win the grand final.

“Yeah definitely – I’ve lost two now so I’m hoping for third time lucky,” said Mateo. “The success of the club was definitely [a factor], when I heard they wanted me, I definitely wanted to come. I’m really happy that I’m here now.

“I’m really looking forward to get out on the field. I’ve only been here a short time but you can tell everyone’s pretty tight and guys look after each other.”

Mateo left the Warriors with two years still to run on his contract. He said: “The direction the club was going in over there wasn’t best suited for me so I thought the best thing would be to come here and start a new journey.”

The Manly pack has lost around 800 games of NRL experience over the past two years, but Mateo feels that with his arrival and the presence of Willie Mason they can pick up the slack.

Despite some high-profile exits from the club, he said he wouldn’t take a Round 1 starting place for granted when Manly take on the Eels on 6th March. The Sea Eagles are 1.70 to beat Parramatta, who are 2.18.
