Martinez hopes for league lift-off

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is hopeful that a last-gasp equaliser against West Ham in the FA Cup will give his side a lift from their Premier League struggles.

The Toffees have plummeted down to 13th place in the league table on the back of four consecutive defeats over the festive period and Martinez was relieved to see his side snatch a late leveller in a 1-1 FA Cup third round clash with West Ham at Goodison Park on Tuesday evening.

It is very important we are still in the cup and can now look forward to the next game in the league.

The Spaniard said after striker Romelu Lukaku rescued a replay: “It would have been very damaging, but you always get an opportunity to win the next game.

“At the moment the cup is such an important competition for us it would have been an horrendous setback.

“It is very important we are still in the cup and can now look forward to the next game in the league, but still aware we are in a bad run.”

And Everton will be tested to the full in their next Premier League outing, as they play host to Manchester City on Saturday, with the Citizens joint top of the table after a run of eight wins in their last nine league games.

City have also won the last three meetings of the two sides, including a 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium just over a month ago, when a Yaya Toure penalty decided the outcome.

The Toffees can be backed at 4.20 to earn a win on Saturday, with the draw 3.75, while Everton are available at 5.50 to keep a clean sheet.
