Martinez calls for Everton reaction

Everton manager Roberto Martinez is keen to see a major reaction from his struggling side when they host West Ham in the third round of the FA Cup on Tuesday evening.

The Toffees go into the game at Goodison Park on the back of a run of just one win in nine games in all competitions, including four straight losses in the Premier League over the festive period.

I do feel as though it is a game where we have to perform well and one we have to win.

And Martinez is desperate to see a turnaround in fortunes, with his side down in the bottom half of the table and needing an FA Cup run to kick-start their campaign.

He told reporters: “I think the FA Cup comes at a good time for us.

“Playing in a different competition can sometimes lift the pressure and, from our point of view, it can be the start of something that can give us a really good platform for the second half of the season.

“We’ll be ready for the game. I do feel as though it is a game where we have to perform well and one we have to win.

“We want to react, as a football club, in the manner that we do at Everton. We will accept the criticism and comments that come from outside because they’ll make us stronger and ready for the rest of the campaign.”

Martinez will be without suspended defender Antolin Alcaraz for the visit of the Hammers, while midfielder James McCarthy misses out due to a hamstring problem, but John Stones and Kevin Mirallas have recovered and are included in the matchday squad.

Everton can be backed at 2.00 to defeat the Irons in 90 minutes and are 8.50 to win by a 2-1 scoreline, with the Toffees 19.00 to lift the FA Cup for the sixth time this season.
