Mark Hughes appointed Southampton’s new manager on deal to end of season

Mark Hughes has claimed he could not turn down the opportunity to become Southampton’s new manager after the club confirmed the Welshman as Mauricio Pellegrino’s successor on Wednesday night.

Hughes’s first game will be an FA Cup tie at Wigan Athletic on Sunday but the club’s principal focus is on trying to stay in the Premier League. Southampton are one point and one place above the relegation zone with eight matches remaining.
