Mariners snap 12-game winless streak

Mitchell Duke ended Central Coast Mariners’ long wait for a win with both goals as they beat Melbourne City 2-0 in Gosford.

The Mariners had been without a victory since the opening round in October and Duke had gone more than 12 and a half hours since last scoring.

He was back in form at Central Coast Stadium, though, with two good finishes to end their 12-game winless streak and take Phil Moss’ side to within four points of sixth spot.

Duke struck twice in the space of 15 minutes in the first half, and the win was then preserved by the excellent goalkeeping of Liam Reddy.

Another turning point came on the hour mark when Duke ran clear of the offside trap looking for his hat-trick but was clattered by keeper Tando Velaphi outside the area.

Referee Peter Green had no option but to dismiss Velaphi, giving the 10-man visitors too much to do to get back into the match.

City were held scoreless for the first time in 18 games, and suffered their first defeat in five matches. The fact that they did not score, when they had 18 shots, was down to Reddy who made a string of excellent saves.

He denied Aaron Mooy and Robert Koren in the first half, producing more top-drawer saves to keep out a Mooy effort and Erik Paartalu’s header after the break.

Duke latched onto a Glen Trifiro through ball to open the scoring, squeezing between two defenders and beating Velaphi with an angled drive.

His second was from a fierce shot from the edge of the area, after Richard Vernes did well to retain possession and square the ball to him.

Central Coast could have added to their tally after City had Velaphi sent off. Substitute keeper Andrew Redmayne tipped away a 40-metre free-kick from Eddy Bosnar and Matt Sim headed wide.

City remain three points behind fifth-placed Sydney FC, who can double that advantage if they beat Wellington Phoenix in their next game, where they areĀ 3.40 to win, with the draw 3.50.
