Mariners rewarded for spirit says Moss

Phil Moss hailed Central Coast Mariners’ spirit after they picked up a long-awaited 2-0 win over Melbourne City thanks to two Mitchell Duke goals.

The 2012-13 A-League champions had been without a victory in 12 matches since their opening-day success against Newcastle Jets.

I have to give full credit to the senior players for keeping the dressing room together after a long spell without a win.

Mariners coach Moss said the players retained their belief and confidence despite the poor run of form, and felt the three points against City were their reward.

He said: “I have to give full credit to the senior players for keeping the dressing room together after a long spell without a win. I’m over the moon for all the players and staff as well.”

The win takes Central Coast to within four points of City, who occupy the last Finals Series spot, and means they have lost just once in their past five games.

The Gosford club had been disappointed not to pick up a win against defending champions Brisbane Roar in their last home match, when they led twice but were held to a 3-3 draw.

“Last week was a real turning point for us at home to score three goals,” said Moss. “It gave us the confidence to know we can score goals and I thought we were threatening just about every time we went forward tonight.”

Duke broke his long scoring drought against City but ended the night on the treatment table. Going through one-on-one against Tando Velaphi, he was flattened in a challenge that earned the City keeper a red card.

Moss said the striker had picked up a knock from his hip down to his ankle and it was fortunate for the Mariners that he now had nearly three weeks to recover while the A-League takes a break for the Asian Cup, where Australia areĀ 3.75 to lift the trophy – with JapanĀ 3.25 and Iran 8.00.

“He was very brave to go in the way he did and for me it was a 100 percent red card,” said the coach. “It just goes to show we’ve got players who are prepared to run through brick walls and put their bodies on the line.”
