Manchester United omit big names for Galatasaray Champions League trip

• Rooney, Ferdinand and Evra left at home
• United have already won Group H

Sir Alex Ferguson has left out most of his big names from Manchester United's squad for Tuesday's Champions League encounter with Galatasaray.

Wayne Rooney was among those to miss out, even though he was able to return to training on Monday morning after sitting out Saturday's defeat at Norwich City with tonsillitis.

With qualification already secured as Group H winners, Ferguson also left out Rio Ferdinand, the captain Patrice Evra and the top scorer Robin van Persie.

Paul Scholes was absent too, as was Ryan Giggs, the only remaining player from that 1993 trip to Istanbul and omitted following his appearance in the loss at Norwich. © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
