Madsen ready for pre-season tour

January 19, 2015 12:23:27 UK

Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen says the pre-season tour to the United Arab Emirates can help continue the club’s momentum.

The Midlands county won five of their final six County Championship matches in 2014 to finish fourth in Division Two. That sequence of results bodes well for this coming summer when they will be amongst the favourites for promotion.

Derbyshire are 7.50 to win the County Championship Division Two this summer, with Lancashire at 4.00 to be crowned champions.

It’s very important that we get into some cricket before the start of the season so we can carry the momentum into the summer.

“The guys are looking forward to it,” Madsen said, ahead of the March trip. “The tour is around eight or nine weeks away now and that time will fly by.

“We have been working hard in training to lead up to the Abu Dhabi tour. It will be a significant step towards the new season and it’s great to get some cricket out there.

“We had an excellent time in Abu Dhabi last year. The weather is obviously great so it allows us to get in the quality training and cricket that we need, that’s why we go over there.

“It’s a great way to prepare both in terms of getting time in the middle and getting into form.”

Derbyshire will face Worcestershire, Middlesex and MCC across all formats on the pre-season trip.

Madsen’s team will once again rely on left-arm fast bowler Mark Footitt – the leading first-class wicket-taker in 2014 – in their quest for 2015 honours.
