Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen is confident that his side can challenge for an immediate return to the first division of the County Championship this summer.

Madsen and co were unable to retain their top-flight status earlier this year, but he believes that stronger performances in the second half of the season will breed some much-needed confidence.

He told the county’s official website: “There’s a belief from what we’ve done during the second half of 2014. That will bode well going into next season and I hope the members share our belief.

“We’ve played great cricket in the last three months. What we have to do in 2015 is start with a bang.

“It’s the people who perform well in the first half of the season that lift trophies at the end of the campaign.

“We’ll back each other and be fearless. We’ll keep coming at teams and we’ll be tough to play against. If you look at the games we won in 2014, we’ve had to hang tough, stay in the game and keep taking blows.”

Derbyshire are 7.50 to win the County Championship Division Two this summer, with Lancashire at 4.00 to be crowned champions.
