Mabil ready to re-focus on Reds

Adelaide United coach Josep Gombau is delighted to have winger Awer Mabil back ahead of their clash with Newcastle Jets on Saturday.

The 19-year-old spent a week training with Ajax after being invited by the Dutch outfit to fly out to Amsterdam during the A-League’s Asian Cup break.

His stint did not result in an offer from the Eredivisie side, but the player and coach both feel Mabil will have benefitted from his trip.

Gombau was happy that the youngster got the chance to train with one of European football’s most renowned youth development clubs.

The Spanish coach said: “He’s a boy that is very connected with our club and he wants to work hard for us. I think that he will have a great future and he just needs to be passionate and work hard – then more good things will come.

“Last month he was (judged) as the best under-20 player in Australia and he deserves that. He needs to keep working and keep focussed and we’re very happy that he is here. We’ll be trying to help him to develop more.”

Mabil said it was unlikely Ajax would follow up with an offer for him, but said it was a great experience.

“Ajax are one of the best (clubs) in developing youth in the world, so it was good to be invited and I’ll take a lot from it,” he added. “It gives me a lot of confidence, but my focus is here with Adelaide, Josep and my team mates to try and win some more silverware…that is my goal.”

The Reds, who are 5.00 to win the Grand Final, resume their A-League season with the home clash against a Jets side who picked up their only win of the campaign against them in Newcastle last month.

Adelaide are 1.40 to beat Newcastle, who are 8.00 with the draw 4.50.
